A few blocks off of Duluth’s well-beaten path to the sites and sounds most people go to Duluth to experience is a poignant monument that memorializes a brutal history. At the corner of East 1st Street and North 2nd Avenue, not far from the site where a terrible event occurred, three young African-American men are remembered.
At 7am I was the only person at this small square. Reading the account of what happened in 1920 gave me perspective as I started my day with my family.
It’s just a short walk up the hill from Canal Park, the next time you visit Duluth consider stopping by for inspiring words and a somber remembrance.
